What is Reflexology?
Reflexology, or zone therapy, is a complementary therapy, intended for use alongside conventional medical care and not as a replacement. It is a practice where certain points of the nerves in the hands feet or ears are stimulated that are known to have positive effects on other parts of the body. Though it is a widely used practice speculations have been made on its science. It is believed to clear blockages for the free flow of Qi throughout the body by applying pressure at certain points. But this Qi is scientifically unapproved and so is the entire system of reflexology. But this science does not go along with the positive results reflexology in a person.
In the nervous system point of view this massage is said to activate some signals through the interconnected nerves in the ears, hands and feet. These signals are then processed in the brain and the reaction of the brain for these signals is a process subconscious self healing and reduces the process of wear and tears in the body and super activating the immune system.
But according to therapists who are familiar with this art of reflexology believe that when the Qi or life force in the body or certain parts of the body does not flow properly then the human experiences stress, pain and sometimes malfunction in those organs where the Qi is imbalanced. This imbalance is reflected in the form of lumps on the feet. The therapist concentrates on these centers and relieves the body and mind of its tensions.
Other hypothesis includes explanation that it is the flow of natural painkillers in the body when activating those certain points.
Though it is not scientifically approved it is still widely used because of its many advantages. For example the person experiences a sense of deep relaxation during the massage process and is usually accompanied by a tingling sensation and sleep more intense than ordinary sleep. Another surprising fact is that the body temperature is greatly reduced. It improves circulation of blood in the body and revitalizes the body and the mind and might even have a positive effect on the personal energy. It can used to cure conditions of Multiple sclerosis, headaches, migraines, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and several other anxiety disorders. Scientifically verified effects have been seen on patients such as reducing depression, blood pressure and stress. However there are serious implications when going for reflexology treatment for medical care. It is required to first diagnose the physical condition of the body. Various therapists employ different ways of reflexology treatment .Mostly foot reflexology is popular in Asia, hands are used when there is injury in the foot and the treatment could last from half an hour to one hour.
Self reflexology is the trend of the season however where one can learn through inexpensive self-help books. Reflexology socks are a talk of the town in Taiwan and China. It is advised to contact a professional before self reflexology is practiced.
